Do you love to use your boat as a fun venue for entertaining friends and family? Then you know that food is an important component of any party or event, even those held out in the middle of the lake. However, it can be challenging to prepare food on a boat, compared to the ease with which you can prepare meals on land. Taking a few extra steps in your food preparation can help you to provide your guests with delicious snacks and meals without too much effort, though. Here are some helpful tips on cooking and serving food on your boat.

1. Cut Up Food in Advance

Instead of wielding a sharp knife on your boat, why not just cut up the foods you intend to cook and eat while you’re still on shore? Bring tupperware containers of diced or chopped vegetables, meats, and fruit with you to cook with.

2. Invest in a Portable Grill

A great way to cook your food on your boat is to invest in a marine or boat grill that affixes to a seat or to the edge of your boat. Some models can be placed directly on a heat-safe surface as well. Grills are versatile devices that can prepare lots of different types of foods, including hamburgers, vegetables, chicken, fish, sausages, and even desserts! Bring plenty of aluminum foil with you, as you can use it to wrap up foods to place them on the grill.

3. Keep Trash Bags Handy

You’ll need to be ready to clean up trash when cooking on a boat to avoid littering. Keep a trash bag secured in a canister with a lid so that napkins, paper plates, plastic utensils, and cups don’t fly away and pollute the waterway. Keep a container for compost as well so that you can put food scraps into it. A separate container for recyclable aluminum cans is also a good idea.

4. Thicken Up Liquids

A hearty cup of chili or soup is great to eat on a boat trip where there may be a chill out on the water. However, the thin broth can scald passengers if the water becomes too choppy and rocks the boat. To prevent this, use cornstarch or instant mashed potato flakes to thicken up any liquids so they won’t spill out.

5. Avoid Sharp Edges

Spoons are probably the safest utensil for eating on a boat, aside from finger foods. Try to avoid serving any foods that require forks and knives. Here are some recommendations:

  • Hamburgers and hot dogs
  • Fresh vegetables or crackers and dips
  • Cups of mixed fruit
  • Pretzels and chips
  • Soups and stews
  • Dessert bars
  • Sandwiches
