If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want to stop boating just because the weather turned cold, then you’re likely aware that you need to take some extra precautions to ensure your safety. As your Oklahoma boat dealership, Arrowhead Yacht Club & Marina has some recommendations on how to prepare for fall and winter boating, whether you stay in the Sooner State or head further north with your boat in tow.

Layer Up

The temperatures out on a body of water can be significantly colder than those on land. You should dress in layers so that you can add or subtract clothing as needed to regulate your body temperature. A layer of long underwear or leggings and a long-sleeved shirt can go under your sweater and jeans or cargo pants. You can then add a pullover and your jacket or coat, along with accessories like thick wool socks, waterproof boots, gloves, scarves, and a hat.

Bring Refreshments

Staying properly hydrated and fed when you’re outside in the cold is crucial to your well-being. If you’re hungry or dehydrated, then you’re at higher risk for developing hypothermia. Carry some thermoses of water, hot tea, cocoa, or coffee with you, along with some high-energy snacks like jerky, nuts, cheese, granola bars, or sandwiches.

Check the Weather

You’ll also want to keep tabs on the forecast wherever you intend to boat, so you can head back to shore if there’s snow or below-freezing temperatures on the forecast. It’s helpful to check the weather before your trip and also while you’re out on the water.
